How to measure for a Bellrest®
The Bellrest is effectively an extension of the horn bell. Measuring for a proper size is not difficult and will result in a beautiful custom fit and will enhance the "projection and clarity" of your horn. The felt pads used in the Bellrest are of extremely high quality, comparable to what is used in Steinway pianos. Your music deserves nothing less.
Measuring with a digital caliper
If you have access to a digital caliper you can get an accurate dimension of the bell rim by holding the caliper perpendicular and measuring in millimeters. The dimension we need is the widest point of the rim, perpendicular to the face of the bell. Be sure to measure the rim in the area that contacts your leg. Some bells, especially those with a hand-hammered rim, can vary considerably around the perimeter.

Using our hardware gauge
Place the graduated slot opening over the bell rim and slide it just to the point where it makes contact with both sides of the widest points of the rim. Be careful to not distort the slot opening or you will get a false reading. The red numbers are millimeters. It may be difficult to see in the photo, but here we have the same dimension that we got with the digital caliper, 3.0 mm. (Dimensions are only critical to the nearest tenth of a millimeter so don't worry about it being perfect, hundredths of a mm are irrelevant.)
